Our Ingredients

We proudly use natural and plant-derived ingredients in the formulation of Petal Power products.  All of our products are created without harmful parabens.  We do not use animal-derived ingredients nor are our products ever tested on animals.  

Yes, some of the ingredients listed below are long and hard to pronounce.  Don't be intimidated!  As purveyors of skin care products, we are required by the FDA to list our ingredients using their assigned International Nomenclature of Cosmetics Ingredients names to ensure world wide clarity and consistency.  Since these names are assigned by scientists based on the ingredient's chemical composition, they often end up very long.  To help you see what each of our ingredients does and how they are derived, we put together this glossary of ingredients for each of our products.  Enjoy!

Joy Ride Creme

Water (Aqua)
Not much to explain here.  Water does a body good.

Glyceryl Stearate
Naturally derived from palm kernel, vegetable oil, or soy oil, glyceryl stearate is used as a skin lubricant and emollient.  It is widely used in lotions and creams as it slows down the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface.  Also used as a thickening agent and helps make cosmetics more stable.

Stearic Acid
A naturally occurring saturated fatty acid, stearic acid is used as a thickener and an emulsifier (binds together agents that normally would not stick together like oil and water).  Derived from vegetable fats.

Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides         
A highly effective skin emollient derived from coconut oil and glycerin.  This rich ingredient is an excellent lubricant, moisturizer, and skin repairer.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil
Sweet almond oil is an emollient containing skin-repairing triglycerides and fatty acids.  Extracted from the dried kernels of sweet almonds, this ingredient yields many benefits such as soothing skin irritations, relieving inflammation, and anti-aging.  

Canola Oil
Derived from the seeds of canola plants, canola oil is very high in vitamin E which makes it very effective for skin care products.  It’s an excellent moisturizer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging ingredient.

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate
An ester of benzoic acid found naturally in cranberries and coconut oil.  C12-15 alkyl benzoate is used commonly in cosmetics as it is a thickening agent, skin emollient, anti-microbial, and preservative.

Glycine Soja Oil
Commonly known as soybean oil, glycine soja is derived from the amino acid of soybeans.  It is rich in vitamin E, making it an excellent emollient and moisturizer.  High antioxidant properties.

Silica
Silica is the second-most abundant element in the Earth’s crust; it’s found naturally in sandstone, clay, granite as well as in parts of plants.  In skin care, it is used as a thickening agent.

Zea Mays (Corn) Starch
Milled into a fine, silky powder from dried corn, cornstarch is used in cosmetics as a thickening agent.

Dimethicone
Derived from silica, dimethicone is used extensively in skin care products since it is an excellent emollient and slip agent.  It leaves a protective barrier on the skin, which helps to retain moisture.

PEG-100 Stearate
Made by combining palm or coconut oil with stearic acid, PEG-100 stearate is used as a skin emollient and an emulsifier.

Ceteareth-20
Used in cosmetics as a thickening agent and an emollient.  Made from fatty acids found in coconut oil and ethylene oxide.

Glycerine
Derived naturally from either hydrolyzing fats or fermenting sugars.  Glycerine is a humectant that will attract water from the environment and from the lower layers of skin, drawing moisture to the surface.

Cetyl Alcohol
A fatty acid derived from palm oil.  Unlike the drying forms of alcohol (like rubbing alcohol), cetyl alcohol achieves the opposite effect in cosmetics as it conditions and softens the skin.

Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract
Beyond consuming it as a tea, extensive research supports green tea’s health benefits when used as an ingredient in cosmetics.  When used topically, green tea has been found to be a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anticarginogenic ingredient.

Tocopheryl Acetate
A form of vitamin E, tocopheryl acetate is an extremely powerful antioxidant used widely in cosmetics.  It is also an extremely effective antioxidant, anti-aging, moisturizer, and anti-inflammatory.

Aloe Barbadensis Extract
Commonly known as aloe vera, aloe barbadensis is one of the most commonly used plant remedy dating back to the ancient Egyptians.  Derived from the leaves of the aloe vera plant, it has been known to reduce skin inflammation and improve moisture.  Also known to have a rich supply of antioxidants.

Ascorbic Acid
A form of vitamin C with highly effective antioxidant and anti-aging properties.

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract
Derived from the leaves of the rosemary plant, this ingredient is known to have powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Phenoxyethanol
A commonly used cosmetic preservative.  Unlike many other cosmetic preservatives, phenoxyethanol does not release formaldehyde.  

Potassium Sorbate
Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid; it is considered one of the safest preservatives available.  Used in cosmetics to prevent mold and yeast growth.

Tetrasodium EDTA
Used as a chelating agent to prevent minerals from bonding to other ingredients, therefore increasing the product’s stability.  

Ethylhexylglycerin
Used as a preservative, ethylhexyglycerin is derived from glycerin.  It’s widely used as a natural alternative to parabens.

Allantoin
An anti-inflammatory ingredient which is a by-product of urea derived from plants.   

Natural Fragrance Oil Blend
A proprietary, all-natural blend of essential oils derived from plants and flowers

Oxy CA (Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract CO2, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides, Ascorbic Acid, Tocopherol, Citric Acid) 
An all-natural antioxidant used to preserve the oils in the formulation to keep them from going rancid
Clean Start Wipes

SD Ethanol 40
Also known as SD Alcohol 40, or Alcohol Denat., SD Ethanol 40 is derived from fermented sugars of corn, wheat, and cane sugar.  Used as a topical antiseptic and antibacterial.

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract
Derived from the leaves of the rosemary plant, this ingredient is known to have powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract
Used as an antibacterial, antioxidant, and antifungal ingredient.  Also thought to have pain-relieving properties.

Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract
Derived from the leaves of this evergreen bush, sage leaf extract has powerful antiseptic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Panax Ginseng Root Extract
Used for centuries in ancient Chinese medicine, ginseng root extract is thought to have powerful healing properties in the treatment of burns, skin irritations, and wounds.  Also thought to be a skin collagen-booster.

Citrus Medica Limonum Extract
Commonly known as lemon extract, this ingredient has many benefits to skin including antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.  

Hedera Helix (Ivy) Extract
Ivy extract has been known to contain natural antimicrobial properties.

Benzyl Alcohol
Organic form of alcohol found in many fruits and teas.  Used as a preservative and solvent.

Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Oil
Native to Australia, tea tree oil has been used for centuries as a highly effective topical antifungal and antiseptic.  It is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties and powerful antioxidants.

Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract
Witch hazel is used extensively in natural skin care products because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties.  

Pinus Taeda (Pinetree) Extract
Contains powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Also known to help smooth skin and improve elasticity. 

Equisetum Arvense Extract
Commonly known as horsetail, this extract is thought to have powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities.  Its high silica content aids with skin repair.

Phenoxyethanol
A commonly used cosmetic preservative.  Unlike many other cosmetic preservatives, phenoxyethanol does not release formaldehyde.  

Ethylhexylglycerin
Used as a preservative, ethylhexyglycerin is derived from glycerin.  It’s widely used as a natural alternative to parabens.

Tetrasodium EDTA
Used as a chelating agent to prevent minerals from bonding to other ingredients, therefore increasing the product’s stability.  

Fresh Finish Cleanser

Water (Aqua)
Not much to explain here.  Water does a body good.

Decyl Glucoside
Extremely gentle, non-drying cleansing agent.  Ideal for people with sensitive skin.  Derived from coconuts and corn starch. 

Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate
Mild "de-greasing" agent; it's larger molecules are unable to penetrate the skin and cause irritation.  It is NOT the same as sodium laurel sulfate; sulfates such as SLS have smaller molecules that can penetrate the skin and cause irritation.  Derived from coconut oil.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Mild cleansing ingredient derived from coconuts.  Safely removes oil, dirt, and bacteria without drying or irritating skin.

Cocoglucosides
A fatty alcohol cleansing agent derived from coconut and glucose (fruit sugar).  Also used as a foaming agent and emulsifier.  One of the most gentle cleansing agents available.

Peg-7 Glyceryl Cocoate
Derived from glycerin and coconut oil; used as an emollient, emulsifier, and cleanser.

Polyquaternium-7
Used as a water-binding agent; creates a thin layer of “film” on skin to keep moisture in.

Sea Salt
Used as a natural detoxifier that also softens skin.  Also known to have mild antiseptic properties.

Aloe Barbadensis Extract
Commonly known as aloe vera, aloe barbadensis is one of the most commonly used plant remedy dating back to the ancient Egyptians.  Derived from the leaves of the aloe vera plant, it has been known to reduce skin inflammation and improve moisture.  Also known to have a rich supply of antioxidants.

Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract
Derived from olive tree leaves, Olea Europaea leaf extract has been used since ancient times for its antioxidants, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.

Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract
Contains natural anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects.  Also contains a rich supply of antioxidants.

Pinus Taeda (Pinetree) Extract
Contains powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Also known to help smooth skin and improve elasticity.

Lavandula Hybrida (Lavandin) Oil
A hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender, lavandin has a higher camphor content which makes it a stronger antiseptic than true lavender.               

Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil 
Lavender is one of the most widely used and versatile essential oils.  It is known for its powerful antibacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cucumis (Cucumber) Extract
Cucumber extract has been used for its cooling and soothing effect it has on skin.  Its rich supply of amino acids, proteins, and trace minerals can reduce skin inflammation.

Hedera Helix (Ivy) Extract
Ivy extract has been known to contain natural antimicrobial properties.
